With this project I chose to create a family cookbook featuring the recipes I grew up with, using this as an opportunity to explore editorial design through a deeply personal lens.
My long-term goal is to continue expanding the collection over time and eventually produce professionally printed copies to distribute to my family members.
Project Proposal:
Creating a family cookbook is a project I’ve wanted to pursue for some time but never had the creative space to fully develop. In the 21 years I’ve been alive, I don’t think my mom has ever made a bad meal. Much of this, I believe, stems from the importance our family places on preparing food that is both thoughtful and flavorful.
This emphasis was passed down from her father, my Opa, who, from what I’ve been told, was quite the chef himself. My mom still uses his preparation techniques, recipes, and culinary secrets, some of which she has yet to share with my siblings and me.
Watching her preserve these traditions has inspired me to preserve them in my own way, through design. My intention with this project is to create a thoughtfully crafted cookbook that organizes recipes in an easy-to-follow format while capturing the character and flair of Dutch culture.
